Crowns Q & A

What is a crown?

A crown is an artificial tooth that caps a damaged natural tooth to improve its appearance and protect the underlying structure. A crown looks and feels just like a natural tooth. You might need a crown for the following issues:

  • Protect a weak tooth
  • Restore a fractured tooth
  • Attach a bridge
  • Cover a poorly shaped or discolored tooth
  • Protect a tooth that’s had a root canal
  • Cap a dental implant

Why choose an all-porcelain crown?

Porcelain looks and feels like a natural tooth. It’s durable, luminescent, and reflects light so your smile benefits. Porcelain can be shaped to match your other teeth in bite, size, and shape, creating a realistic false tooth.

What is a zirconia crown?

Zirconia crowns are made of the metal zirconia, which is extremely durable. The material is especially useful for crowns set in the back of your mouth for a few reasons. First, those teeth are responsible for chewing and grinding and benefit from zirconia’s durability, and also because the material is not as translucent as porcelain crowns, so they look less natural.

Also, zirconia crowns can be cut and shaped in the office, all in one visit, so you get a replacement tooth quickly.

What is an e.max crown?

E.max crowns are made of ceramic and are best suited if you need a cap on one of your front teeth. The ceramic is made from quartz, lithium dioxide, phosphoroxide, alumina, potassium oxide, and other trace elements.

The e.max crowns are known for their attractiveness, strength, and durability.

How do I know which crown is right for me?

Dr. Arana can help you decide which type of crown best suits your needs and budget. Your choice depends on where in your mouth the crown is going and your desired aesthetic result. The function of the crown also determines the type that’s best. For example, you might choose a porcelain crown to anchor a bridge, while an e.max crown best covers an implant on your upper front tooth.
